New Music: Alfa Mist | Nocturne (EP) (And A Few Extra Thoughts)
Sat on this for a few days as when commenting on a full length project I like to have a few listens to digest it. I'm a big admirer of Alfa Mist's previous project, a collaboration with Singer Emmavie entitled 'Epoch', and listen to the 'Are We Live Podcast' which he is a resident contributor of, so was really looking forward to seeing what direction he took with 'Nocturne' after getting little snippets of information regarding it.
I'm not too articulate with my use of correct Music terminology as I prefer to just say how the Music makes me feel, so without getting too deep, 'Nocturne' is a very impressive body of work. There's a mixture of Instrumentals, Interludes and full length vocalled tracks with notable features from his Are We Live brethren's Barney Artist, Tom Misch & Jordan Rakei, as well as the aforementioned Emmavie, Alfa also Raps on a few tracks, most notably on 'Closer'. The project just seems to flow and each track has a steady transition in to the other, and I always like Interludes that make you wish they were full tracks. The Musicality and instrumentation is that of a seasoned Musician so it's scary to think of what is to come if this is the standard being set.
The Musical influences, that I know of, are quite apparent, I would draw comparisons to Robert Glasper's work where I hear Jazz sounds, and the king J Dilla on the more Hip-Hop driven production, all the while possessing the uniqueness that Alfa is undoubtedly providing in his creations.
Stand out tracks for me are 'No Peace', 'Closer', 'Hopeful' and 'Sunrise (Pillows)' as my ear is more tuned in to the vocals, whether sung or rapped, however that doesn't take anything away from my appreciation of the arrangements on the non vocalled tracks.
Nothing but positive opinions from me on this EP, listen below and let me know what your thoughts, would be good to engage more with readers;
